The Americans were unacceptable for having free-market prescription drug prices, where drug producers enjoyed huge profits. Patients had to choose between their daily needs and their need for medication.

A recent analysis by the Senate Committee on Aging recognized that Canada's and other similar developed countries ' standards are typically "strict and comparable to US standards." The latest version of the bill also includes safeguards for the US governing body’s oversight of drug sourcing and counterfeiting protection.

The Sanders bill includes more extensive reforms, including a fund to support public funding for clinical research and the development of new bacterial infection treatments — a non-profit-focused pathway to combat antibiotic resistance. Yet Canadian market competition would be combined with more strict patenting requirements for prescription medication manufacturers pursuing exclusive product market control.

The main reason why the drugs are not imported is because of safety concerns. Canada's health care system cannot be purchased by the U.S. government but can play a vital role by implementing a fairer cost structure.

Americans may reach a certified Canadian pharmacy for cheaper drugs by enabling medications to be bought and shipped through boundaries. The plan could save customers as much as 35 to 55% of the usual pricing of the US list.
